UMD College Democrats

Tonight, February 1st, 2012, we had State Senator Jim Rosapepe take questions from club members. He talked about everything from marriage equality to the Governor's budget. He also talked about the importance of re-electing President Obama and Senator Ben Cardin.

Also, Erin Schurmann from Young Democrats of Maryland talked about their upcoming events including their upcoming lobbying night in a few weeks. Please let us know if you are interested in attending.

Next week College Democrats will be attending an event with Tim Wise, a prominent political writer. We'll hope you'll join us.

Hey everyone! The executive board has had its first meeting and we're going to be doing some pretty cool things this semester. Most notably, we are going to be stepping up our campaign efforts in a big way for Obama. Don't worry, though, we'll also have our usual discussion, speakers, and other events.

Hey Everyone,

I want to thank everyone for being a part of College Democrats this year! I think I can say that this year has been one of College Democrat's best. We had State Senator Jim Rosapepe, Governor Martin O'Malley, Congressman John Sarbanes, State Senator Paul Pinsky, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and more. We had two extensive advocacy campaigns and helped to campaign to get several local Democrats re-elected.

I have enjoyed being President of this club very much. I just want to thank everyone who had any part in making College Democrats the great club that it is. Also, I want to especially thank the e-board (Andre, Giuls, Alexa, Tyler, Paola, Peter, Steven, Josh, Justin, and Jon) for being the heart and soul of this club.

Furthermore, I want to congratulate Paola Henry for being elected the next President. Also, I want to congratulate Tyler Grote (the new Vice President) and Alexa Stott (the new secretary). I think they will do an amazing job next year! If you were involved this year or even if you weren't involved, I would encourage you to keep up to date with College Democrats events next year! Once again, thank you everyone for helping to keep College Democrats one of the most active and effective groups on campus!

Jim Rosapepe officially came out in support of SB116. Thank you to everyone who wrote letters and supported our campaign. We could not have hoped for a better response from the campus. Together, we made this happen!

O'Malley!

Tonight we saw Governor Martin O'Malley win re-election. Although Republicans made some big gains in the House, I can't help but be happy with the fact that Democrats still retain control of the Senate and that the great state of Maryland did not fall into the hands of an incompetent politician such as former Governor Ehrlich. Rhetoric aside, Governor O'Malley has done so much for the state of Maryland and he can hardly be blamed for our recent national recession. There was no doubt that he was the better candidate for the environment, higher education, and job creation. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this happen. Governor O'Malley has showed a continual commitment to the University of Maryland, and I wouldn't expect anything less than that in his next term. I can now proudly say that I am looking forward to the next four years!

An Interesting Debate

The College Democrats debated the College Republicans tonight at the Stamp Student Union. The debate ranged from the issue of education to the importance of protecting our environment. I enjoyed the debate. It was unfortunate that at the end we got distracted by questions regarding federal issues, but I think it was a great way to inform students on state issues. The College Republicans seemed lost on a couple of issues. They seemed to be unaware of the discretion a governor has over fees such as room and board, and seemed to forget that fees went up more under Ehrlich's term than they did under O'Malley's. They also didn't have an answer to the fact that Ehrlich's former budget director admitted that he in fact left a $1.7 billion deficit when he left office.

As to the College Republican's point about the Wikileaks articles proving that there were in fact weapons of mass destruction, I hadn't heard anything about that before tonight. After doing some research it seems there were some minor chemical weapons found which should have been destroyed after the Gulf War, but the documents showed nothing to the scale that President Bush claimed before the war. Also, just because some minor chemical weapons were found does not mean it was an effective and useful war. But that's a separate issue entirely.

I think the College Democrats showed why Governor O'Malley deserves our vote. He has kept our tuition at incredibly low levels and has cared for this University. There has been no such commitment from former Governor Ehrlich. That's why I think next Tuesday, the students at this school will overwhelmingly vote for Governor O'Malley. Go vote!

A Successful Beginning

This month has been one of the most successful for the UMD College Democrats! We started the year off with a meeting with State Senator Jim Rosapepe who gave us a fascinating perspective on the democratic landscape. He continues to be a great friend of the club.

Next, we had Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius come and speak to students about the upcoming November elections. She helped get our club and members of Organizing for America excited about the upcoming election.

The same week we had Congressman John Sarbanes come speak to our club about his personal background and the upcoming elections. He answered students questions and gave us great insight regarding the upcoming election.

Lastly, Governor O'Malley himself decided to begin his official campaign right here in College Park with the University of Maryland College Democrats. He talked about his commitment to higher education and about the important issues facing our state. We were happy to give him our support as he fired up the student body!
